Size & Capacity
This carry on is listed as 21″ tall, but it is actually closer to 23″ when you include the handles and wheels. This is important to note because carry on size limits include handles and wheels for most if not all airlines. The 23″ allows this to pass for a carry on with some U.S. airlines and perhaps some international airlines, but not all. Reviews have indicated that many customers have been able to use this bag as a carry on. I suppose airlines are not always strict about upholding their carry on size limit, but it may be a risk. Some smaller aircraft may tag your carry on and store underneath the plane for space reasons, but you will not have to pay extra. If you are able to bring it aboard an aircraft, it is small enough to roll sideways down the aisle. If you pack shoes or other bulky items in the front pockets, it may not fit into the overhead compartment.
If you would like a similar carry on that is smaller in size, check out the Samsonite Silhouette Sphere 2 19″ Spinner.
For information on specific airline carry on size requirements, read this article.
As far as packing space goes, this carry on fits up to a week’s worth of clothes. The main compartment is deep, and the pockets allow better organization. There are 2 large pockets on the outside, mesh and waterproof pockets on the inside lid, and a pocket inside the main compartment – which is nice for small items like receipts & papers. Some people wish this bag had a small pocket in the front for holding easy-to-access items such as boarding passes and reading material.
This carry on is large enough for business travel too. The removable garment bag works well for holding your dress clothes. However, one reviewer complained that this suiter is only adequate for holding 1 sport coat while a previous Samsonite model was capable of handling multiple shirts and suits. Others have said that it works very well.
The holding straps & fasteners are wider than usual, better securing your items in place.
Like other spinners, this carry on has 4 multi-directional wheels, allowing you to roll it upright. What makes this carry on unique is how the wheels are split sphere wheels. Each half of the wheels are able to move independently of the other half – in the same or opposite direction. This makes for easier maneuverability on uneven or smooth surfaces, less effort, & more control & turning ability. It moves so easily that it may roll away from you if you let go. One customer said that it rolls like a dream. Another said it was great for going over cobblestone streets on their Europe trip. Some say it does not roll on carpet, while others say it’s not too bad. This may depend on how heavy the carry on is and how much is packed.
The top, side, & bottom handles make taking this carry on out of the overhead bin and/or vehicle very easy.
While some claim this bag rarely topples over and has great balance, others say it tips easily. How it is packed and what is packed can influence its balance. It may tip over easily if the outer pockets are packed too full or if you pack heavier items such as your shoes in the front. As a general rule, pack the heaviest items at the bottom (in the main compartment).
Quality & Comfort
The Samsonite Silhouette Sphere 2 carry on is sturdy, high quality, & lightweight. It has strong rubberized corner protectors, guarding it from wear & scratches. A couple customers claim it is better than Tumi & than Briggs & Riley – not a premium feeling as B&R but a great medium quality & definitely better than cheaper brands. Another customer used to buy Hartmann but has found Samsonite to be cheaper & just as well made, only lacking in style.
The push button handle is strong and the fact that it is gel-infused makes it very comfortable.
Samsonite has a reputation of having great customer support.
The Samsonite Silhouette Sphere 21″ is a quality and sturdy carry on. The only concern I have is the size. However, if you stick to a particular airline and know that this carry on matches it’s size requirements, this would be a great luggage piece to have.
